dear girls dear boy

If you’ve made good life choices on Tumblr, you’ve seen this photo reply by Einstein on Acid:

Well this is just part of a whole hilarious movement of replies to hand-drawn-sign boys. It’s “I am the 99%” parodies all over again.

This next one is by Tumblr user Come Candela/putawh0re:

(UPDATE 7/17/13: NSFW photo pixellated to comply with Google AdSense rules)

It got huge on Reddit’s designated female subreddit, /r/TwoXChromosomes under the name “The correct response to internet slut-shaming” (and without credit). At first, commentary centered on how the boy hides his face and shows off his naked body. Hilarz, and a perfect sign of the hypocrisy in this “girls, you don’t need to please me! Here’s how to please me” bullshit. (Also note how space-boy Photoshopped the hell out of his face.)

But after a few hours, the discussion shifted from supportive-of-women to defensive-of-boy. As redditor redtaboo noted, that’s because the post got so popular that people who don’t spend much time in /r/TwoXChromosomes saw it — and that population is overwhelmingly male. So in rushed the men to defend the boy. They warned against generalizing about the boys’ intentions — which others pointed out was exactly what those boys had done to confident women. Since Reddit’s technology rewards popular opinions, the flood of outsiders is temporarily turning /r/TXC into a less-safe space for women and feminists.

Defending the boys isn’t inherently evil. It’s largely just privilege-ignorance. The boys in the two pics above look like teens. It’s not crazy to think they thought, honestly, they were doing a good respectful thing. But their message really is condescending and slut-shaming! If this reinforces to girls that they should look to men for the “rules on being a woman”, that sucks and those boys should feel bad! But they’re young, and the “fuck off” responses could teach them — and the many other people seeing these responses — how to truly respect women’s autonomy. Hopefully they won’t take these women’s hilarious responses as an excuse to devolve into nasty adult misogynists. And hopefully some of the Reddit guys who rushed to the guys’ defense will actually read the replies pointing out the irony, and hopefully some of them will learn from it.

OK, back to silly pictures. Because isn’t a satirical response the best way to gently guide everyone to the truth that we should all do what makes us happy without bossing others around?

Tumblr’s destitutedandy adds Loki from Avengers:

Literarymercenary adds a belly dinosaur:

Icewater Jones has a fucking sweet blog header for his super-NSFW blog of big-booty bitches, but he’s pretty down-to-earth about his male gaze:

And Tumblr has more riffs.

So! The “be a feminist the way boys want you to” sign trend turned into a “make a funny sign pointing out pseudofeminism” trend! Comedy and enlightenment! Internet wins!

  • Dude

now i know what it’s like to read things written by people who are perpetually unhappy and worked up over perceived injustices on the internet

    • Anonymous

How do you know they are perpetually unhappy and worked up? Are you some kind of psychic? Do you know the winning Mega Millions numbers by any chance?

      • GonzO Rodrigue

        STOP SLUT-SHAMING HIM

    • Kudsaddkkd

Yeah, can’t be that any of them are poking fun at them.

  • Not a man

While we’re talking about safe spaces, is r/TwoXChromosomes really a good name for a safe space for all women?

    • joe biznis

of course, because women have an extra x chromosome.

Wow… I guess it really doesn’t help to try and be nice to people on the internet. I’m definitely going back to being a dick.
